What is MMR?

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease characterized by a distinctive red rash, fever, and other flu-like symptoms. Mumps is an infectious viral illness that causes swollen salivary glands, fever, and can lead to complications like orchitis and meningitis. Rubella, also known as German measles, is a viral infection that typically causes a mild rash and fever but can be dangerous to pregnant women, potentially causing birth defects in the fetus.

Vaccination against Measles, Mumps, and Rubella is crucial for several reasons:

Preventing Infections: The MMR vaccine significantly reduces the risk of contracting and spreading these contagious diseases.
Avoiding Complications: Vaccination lowers the chances of developing severe conditions associated with these diseases, such as pneumonia, skin infections, meningitis, and encephalitis.
Protecting Vulnerable Populations: By getting vaccinated, especially in cases of compromised immunity or pregnancy, you can help shield vulnerable individuals from serious complications.

Vaccine Side Effects

Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site: This is a common and usually mild reaction.
Fever: Some individuals may develop a mild fever after vaccination.
Mild Rash: In some cases, a mild rash may occur. This rash is typically not severe and usually goes away on its own.
Temporary Joint Pain: Some individuals, particularly adults, may experience temporary joint pain after receiving the MMR vaccine.

These side effects usually occur within a few days of vaccination and resolve on their own.

Serious side effects from the MMR vaccine are extremely rare. However, as with any vaccine, there is a very small risk of an allergic reaction. Signs of a severe allergic reaction may include difficulty breathing, swelling of the face and throat, and a rapid heartbeat. If these symptoms occur, it’s crucial to seek immediate medical attention.
