The Importance of Herpes Testing

At Private Medical Clinic, we provide comprehensive Herpes Simplex Testing. Our testing services allow you to swiftly and efficiently confirm whether your symptoms are linked to HSV, ensuring timely and accurate diagnosis.

Our testing process involves collecting a sample of fluid from one of your blisters using a swab. This liquid is then tested on-site for HSV. We also offer blood tests that can detect either Herpes type 1 or type 2. Additionally, during the testing process, we can screen for other sexually-transmitted infections (STIs) to ensure a comprehensive evaluation of your sexual health.

What are the most common symptoms of Herpes?

Herpes can be difficult to recognise, as most people don’t experience any symptoms when they first contract the disease. Typically symptoms begin to show around four to seven days after infection. These can include:

  • Penile or vaginal discharge
  • Discomfort during urination
  • Flu-like symptoms such as fever, aches and pains.
  • Cold sores, characterised by red, itchy lesions around the mouth’s edges, are common.
  • Small fluid-filled blisters that, upon bursting, form red and open sores.

What is Herpes Simplex?

Herpes simplex is a viral infection that can affect the mouth, genitals, or anal area. It is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), which comes in two types: type 1 and type 2. Both types present themselves in the form of small blisters and ulcers. Type 1 commonly causes “cold sores” around the mouth, while type 2 is associated with “genital herpes.”

How can Herpes be treated?

While there is no cure for herpes simplex, our experienced GPs can provide effective treatment options to manage the condition and alleviate discomfort during outbreaks. Oral antiviral medication is commonly used for treating the primary herpes infection and as suppressive therapy for genital herpes. These medications target the infected cells, actively attacking the virus and preventing further growth. As a result, most patients experience rapid improvement within 24 to 48 hours.
